May 27, 2008 - Press Dispensary - The Indian contemporary art market is witnessing an incredible boom with prominent collectors, such as Charles Saatchi and Frank Cohen, extending their collection to contemporary art from India, and global auctions experiencing record crowds.
Kensington's Shades and Wood Gallery has teamed up with Art Circle of India to bring the works of sixty of its venerable masters and emerging talents for a UK group show. Names such as Paritosh Sen, Suhas Roy, Prakash Karmarkar, Jogen Chowdhury, Ganesh Haloi, Babu Xavier, Jai Zharotia, Robin Mondal, Sunil Das, Sameer Aich, Achutan, Adimoolan, Thota Vaikuntham, Laxma Goud, Yusuf Arakkal, Rini Dhumal, Prafulla Dahanukar are but a few that set the tone for this exhibition.
Featuring so many prominent artists, the show promises to be a fusion of variety, colour, styles and techniques heralding from across India, with origins including Kolkata, Chennai, Kerala, Hydrabad, Bangalore, Baroda, Mumbai and Delhi. One can gauge the great variations in tradition and culture existing in the country merely by looking at the works of the artists.
The show will commence at the Nehru Centre, 8 South Audley Street,
London, W1K 1HF, on May 27, 2008 from 6 pm and the exhibition will continue until June 6, 2008. The show will then move to the Shades and Wood Gallery, 77 Kensington Church Street, London, W8 4BG on June 11 until June 22, 2008. The Kensington Preview on the June 11 will start at 6pm.
