Giving Mums the Information they Need

June 25, 2008 - Press Dispensary - With ever-increasing public awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, it’s probably safe to say we all know breast is best for babies. However, for one mum, breastfeeding is something she feels so passionately about that she has taken it a step further with the creation of a website, BreastfeedingMums.com

Based in Northern Ireland, Sinead Hoben, a former teacher and mother of three breastfed children, created the website to provide mothers with reliable pregnancy and breastfeeding information.

Sinead comments: “When I was breastfeeding my first baby eight years ago, I often felt very isolated, a common feeling amongst mothers who choose to breastfeed. Like many first-time breastfeeding mothers, I didn’t know some of the basic facts about breastfeeding such as how often my baby should be feeding, how to avoid and treat breastfeeding problems or even whether a breastfed baby needed winding after a feed!

“I also longed to share my personal experiences of breastfeeding with other mothers.”

Because she had no-one to discuss such things with, Sinead often found breastfeeding challenging. However with the support of her health visitor and her own determination to succeed she continued to breastfeed her first baby for 16 months.

Knowing many breastfeeding mothers quit breastfeeding prematurely simply because they can’t access accurate information or because they feel they’re on their own, Sinead wanted to make a difference.

Having realised the internet was an ideal way to reach mothers, she began working on her website in order to provide the information and camaraderie that she felt she had missed out on first time around.

Alongside a wealth of articles written by Sinead, Breastfeeding Mums features medical articles by world breastfeeding expert, Dr Jack Newman. This means breastfeeding mothers get the very best advice from an expert in the field as well as from an experienced mother.

Other important and useful features include a prominent link to LactMed, the American Drugs and Breastfeeding Database provided by the US National Library of Medicine which allows mothers to check whether any medications they are on are compatible with breastfeeding; a free breastfeeding-friendly birth plan; and B’Mums Pregnancy Relaxation mp3, which can be downloaded from the site for a small fee.

In addition, Breastfeeding Mums also offers mothers the opportunity to chat about and share their own experiences of parenting, pregnancy and breastfeeding via an online forum recently incorporated into the site.

Sinead continues: “It’s taken two and a half years of working day and night to get the site to where I want it to be but what makes it all worthwhile is regularly getting thank you emails from mothers I’ve helped. By continually adding new articles and endeavouring to make the site ever more useful to mothers, I find that mums who visit the site keep returning and importantly also pass on the link to their peers.”

With almost 100,000 unique visitors per month currently using the site, Breastfeeding Mums is filling a gap in the breastfeeding market and providing mums with the information they need.
