British Association of Anger Management Helps People Have a Calm Christmas and a Chilled New Year

National Anger Awareness Week - 1 - 7 December, 2005

Press Dispensary - November 28, 2005 - Christmas is supposed to be ‘festive’ and a ‘holiday’ but it can drive people round the bend, what with over-crowded stores, screaming children, family disputes, the tribulations of the office party and too much food and drink. For some individuals, it can push their stress levels – and tempers – over the edge. Following its significant successes in 2005, The British Association of Anger Management (BAAM) (http://www.angermanage.co.uk) is helping people keep calm for Christmas 2005 with its National Anger Awareness Week, taking place from 1 to 7 December.

BAAM has promoted an annual National Anger Awareness Week in the UK for the last five years and has helped over 6000 people contain their potential stress and anger. During the special week, BAAM will be emailing people throughout the country to offer information packs, courses and programmes designed to take the heat out of Christmas. On http://www.angermanage.co.uk, BAAM offers a downloadable ‘Keep Your Cool Kit’, which can be used daily in the home or workplace to help people learn how to manage and express their anger appropriately.

Mike Fisher, director of BAAM, comments: “Christmas is a fraught and emotional time of year and, unfortunately, for many people this leads to feelings of stress and frustration which can provoke aggressive and sometimes even violent behaviour. The tools we promote during National Anger Awareness Week are designed to help people understand what triggers their anger and remain calm and collected for Christmas – and into the New Year.”

Besides National Anger Awareness Week, BAAM runs various programmes throughout the year, across the country, delivered as weekend sessions or 10 week series of workshops and seminars.

In particular, 2005 has been a good year for BAAM. The organisation has seen attendance of its monthly programmes increase by 10% and its introductory evenings by 100%. Meanwhile, Southwark Borough Council commissioned BAAM to run four anger management programmes for men, as part of its men’s health initiative, which concludes in March 2006. More than 95 men have benefited from the programmes so far.

BAAM’s Mike Fisher has also experienced personal success with his book, ‘Beating Anger’, with 9,000 copies sold since its launch in London, Cape Town and Johannesburg in March 2005. Mike is now working on the next book in his series, ‘Beating Fear’, which will launch in March 2007.

Mike Fisher was the specialist on BBC’s ‘Can’t Stop Losing My Cool’ programme about angry people, which screened in February 2005. He is also a regular participant on talk radio and discussed anger management on more than 60 shows during 2005.
