Xbox 360 Beating Playstation by 3:1 but Nintendo Wii Beats them Both

November 26, 2009, Press Dispensary. In the press and online today, retailer (MVC) has been quoted as saying that the Xbox 360 would win the Xmas 2009 console war, beating Sony's more expensive Playstation by a ratio of three to one. However, according to Darren Mckillop of DMC Media - owner of the UK’s leading price comparison sites dedicated to games consoles  -  neither of these HD consoles will win the top spot this Xmas, as that title will once again go to the Nintendo Wii.

"Although our traffic figures are not as high as MVC, we regularly see half a million visitors per month across our sites, rising to 2 to 3 million around Xmas time,” said Mckillop, “and Nintendo Wii presently has an unassailable 75% market share.”

He continues: “We believe we have a more balanced view on these sales figures, as our sites are specifically for games console whereas MVC covers all retail sectors. We have dedicated sites for all current platforms, including Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii, Sony PSP, Sony PSP Go and Nintendo DS/DSi. In terms of traffic and awareness, they are the most popular price comparison sites for games consoles in the UK. And their message is clear.

"For the past 2 years, sales of the PS3 have always been low compared to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, but things really improved for Sony when it cut the price of its console by £50 and released the PS3 slim, with a RRP of £249.99. For the first time in years we saw PS3 sales pick up and during August and September 2009 the PS3 outsold both the Xbox 360 and the Wii console."

"But Microsoft and Nintendo responded by releasing new models and packages, and slashing their own prices. The average online price for the Xbox 360 Elite is now £189.99 and the new Nintendo Wii package is just £159.99. As a result, by the end of October 2009, the PS3 was right back where it started in the number 3 spot, with the Xbox 360 at number 2 and the Wii firmly back in the top spot again with 61% of the market share."

"This month the Wii has increased that lead to 75%, which we think is due several factors. Firstly Nintendo has changed the standard Wii package: it now contains Wii Sports Resort and Wii Motion Plus as well as the old Wii Sports game. Nintendo has also released a black Wii console which has proved to be very popular. And last but not least is the major discounting we've seen from big retailers such as Sainsbury’s. This month we've seen Wii consoles for as little as £134.99."

In summary, it seems that the Xbox 360 may be winning the HD console battle for the year, but the Nintendo Wii is most definitely winning the console war.
