FifteenB Premieres Robert Hugill’s One Act Opera, ‘When a Man Knows’

2010-05-11

May 11, 2010, Press Dispensary. Successful contemporary music group, FifteenB, announces the premiere concert performance of Robert Hugill’s new one act opera, ‘When a Man Knows’, with libretto based on the award-winning play of the same name by Scottish playwright Alan Richardson. A concert to launch this modern opera takes place on Sunday June 13, 2010, at St. John's Church, Waterloo, London.

The central premise of ‘When a Man Knows’ is that a man is tied up in a warehouse. But why is he there? The shocking truth is revealed. Starring soprano Deborah Stoddart as the woman, baritone Dario Dugandzic as the man, and with Sarah Barham and John Beaumont as the male and female chorus, ‘When a Man Knows’ is accompanied by an instrumental ensemble conducted by David Roblou, musical director of ‘Midsummer Opera’.

Alan Richardson' s play, ‘When a Man Knows’, was first staged at the Performing Arts Centre, Elizabeth College, Hobart, Tasmania in 2003, and received its UK premiere at the Kings Head Theatre, Islington in 2004. The play was shortlisted in the ‘SCDA Play on Words Competition’ and also in the ‘Drama Association of Wales Short Play Competition’.

Deborah Stoddart's recent appearances have included title roles in ‘Norma and Turandot’ and as Agathe in ‘Der Freischütz’ with Midsummer Opera in April 2010. She covered the role of Aida at the English National Opera in 2008.

Robert Hugill of FifteenB says: “This gripping new opera uses just four singers and four instrumentalists to create a taut music drama. The play has been aptly described as ‘dark, disturbing and imaginative – a compelling and intriguing piece of writing’.”

The premiere of ‘When a Man Knows’ takes place at 7pm on Sunday June 13, 2010, at St. John's Church, Waterloo Road, London, SE1. Tickets priced £10 (concessions £5) are available on the door or in advance from Islington Music, telephone 020 7354 3195. Tickets can also be bought online from http://oclassical.com/7284 . About FifteenB
FifteenB was formed by composer Robert Hugill in 1994 to promote concerts of accessible contemporary music. Based in London and around a chamber choir, the group has promoted regular concerts that mix Robert's music with other contemporary music. The choir's first concert was in 1994 at the Chapel of the House of St. Barnabas in Soho, when Robert's cantata ‘Vocibus Mulierum - Women's Voices’ - was given its premiere. In 1998, FifteenB received a grant from the National Lottery, through the Arts Council for England, to allow it to stage the premiere of Robert's cantata ‘The Young Man and Death’ with the Salomon Wind Octet. In June 2000, the choir gave the first performance of Robert's ‘Requiem Mass’ at the Chelsea Festival. It was invited back to the Chelsea Festival in June 2002, when it performed a programme jointly with Philharmonia Brass, and subsequently returned in 2004 and 2006. In 2001, it performed Robert Hugill's first opera, ‘Garrett’, at Hoxton Hall, in a staging by Darren Royston with Damian Thantrey as Garrett.
