H2 Clubs To Launch Fresh Approach for London Commuters

2011-02-01
‘Park & Shower, Run & Revive’ coming for London’s cycle and foot commuters

February 01, 2011, London. Press Dispensary. With environmental issues, fitness and weight management – not to mention rising inflation and travel costs – causing constant concern, a multi million pound concept is being launched to make running, cycling and walking to work a viable and more attractive proposition for London commuters. H2 is a private members club for those who use two legs or two wheels to get to work and its flagship premises in Soho is due to open in April this year. Work has already commenced on the 13,000 sq ft site in Dufours Place (just off Broadwick Street, W1) and, following an eight-week fit-out programme, the £1.5m redevelopment will create 20 full and part time jobs.

The core idea behind H2 is that commuters who care about health, fitness, the environment or commuting costs can get to work under their own steam without taking that steam into the workplace. H2 offers them somewhere to freshen up, change, store bikes and clothing, and further improve their fitness and well-being through its gym facilities and additional therapies. H2 is a wholly new concept which offers the customer a flexible, high quality approach to health and fitness at very reasonable prices, helping them to stay fit and healthy, keep travel costs low and personal grooming standards high ... as well as cutting the capital’s carbon emissions and congestion levels.

... cycling four miles to and from work can significantly increase a person’s aerobic fitness as well as helping with weight management and improving mood, strength and co-ordination.
Piers Slater

In 2010, around 545,000 daily bicycle journeys were made in London, which was a 91% increase since 2000, and even up 9% on 2009. Piers Slater, founder of H2 comments:

“It’s no surprise that cycling is so popular: cycling four miles to and from work can significantly increase a person’s aerobic fitness as well as helping with weight management and improving mood, strength and co-ordination.”

He adds: “The Department of Transport ‘Cycle to Work Guarantee’ encourages the provision of proper bike storage, changing facilities and safe cycle routes – and H2 provides exactly that. Cycling to work beats public transport, which may be over-crowded, there’s no congestion charge to pay and it’s more sustainable than other forms of transport. Our team has received huge demand from corporate clients’ employees. Membership to H2 is an easy way for a company to hit carbon reduction targets and please employees all round.”

To keep its carbon footprint as low as possible, H2 is investing in energy efficient showers, sustainable materials and efficient energy heating systems. Simply by increasing the number of people who are cycling or running will help cut carbon emissions; it is estimated that one H2 club could save 1,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

At H2, there are no contracts, no catches and no hidden costs – members have the freedom to simply pay for what they use. The cost of H2 membership is affordable, at just £27.99 a month for off-peak membership and £39.99 a month for peak. Corporate discounts are available. Slater confirms “We believe commuters can save between £40 and £120 per month by using H2 in comparison to their existing travel, health and fitness arrangements such as travel cards, congestion charges, fuel, parking and more.”

People can now join online at www.h2clubs.co.uk and for a limited period only, there is no joining fee, saving £29.99 per person.

Slater concludes: “H2 is working with Tfl, Westminster, City Corporation and corporate clients to remove the barrier from exercising to work. H2 will take the cycle and running revolution to the next stage and make car-free London a reality, getting the hearts, minds and feet of Londoners moving.”

H2 Clubs – Soho and the City

The H2 Club in Soho is to be the first of several. When complete, it will offer 230 cycle parking spaces with CCTV coverage, additional security services (including H2’s bike register and Smartwater technology), 40 showers and 1,200 lockers, together with high specification changing and vanity areas. H2 will offer personal training with some of London’s top personal trainers, core fitness training and sports massage.

H2 has also collaborated with international master trainers Sarah and Sandro Morelli and the Spinning® Program to create the H2 Spin. The bespoke studio will be fitted out and designed with only the highest quality of Spinning® in mind, complete with 33 Star Trac Spinner NXT bikes and an audio visual set up for specialist classes, master classes and racing events, including special guest sessions.

For complete member service and convenience, H2 will provide a dry cleaning and laundry service (with 24 hour turnaround), permanent towel and locker hire, and a team of professional on-site mechanics offering a full bike repair and maintenance service so members can drop their bike off in the morning and pick it up on the way home. The club will also provide a retail area for cyclists and runners to compliment the soon-to-be-launched ecommerce site www.h2bikerun.co.uk.

H2 is scheduling a second club in London Wall to open in Summer 2011, with a third site close to being agreed.  H2 appeals equally to individuals and to organisations wishing to provide such facilities for their personnel.

H2 Clubs and Cycle to Work

The development of H2’s first club follows the completion of two of London’s 12 planned cycle highways in May 2010. Transport for London (TfL) and the government are heavily promoting the popular Cycling to Work scheme. Significant investment has been made in cycle routes, amounting to a record £111m spend on cycling in 2009/10. The aim is to encourage a 400% increase in London cycling by 2025. However, to date, the issue of shower and changing facilities hasn’t been tackled. TFL has acknowledged this problem and is working in association with H2 to promote its facilities.

H2 as an Employee Benefit

Ideal for commuters living in the suburbs that cycle or run into central London daily, the H2 clubs will enable members to park up, freshen up, then walk a short distance to work. H2 has had significant interest from blue chip companies who have confirmed that lack of cycle provision, such as bike storage, shower and changing facilities, is the single biggest issue and frustration raised by their staff.

For companies that offer H2 membership as an employee benefit, the advantages are numerous. As well as saving money and the environment, cycling to work energises and de-stresses employees, and improves their overall health which, in turn, can lead to less absenteeism and higher productivity. By cycling or running to work, commuters can avoid the hassle of over-crowded public transport, save significant travel time and costs, enjoy the sights of London en route to work, know that they’re getting fit and helping the planet, arriving at work as fresh as a daisy after using H2’s facilities.
