World's First Carbon Lottery Offers 4m Euro Prize for Offsetting

2011-06-29
New international carbon lottery offers punters the chance to win 4m Euros (3.6 million GBP) by playing for good

June 29, 2011, Press Dispensary. For anyone who fancies becoming a multi-millionaire in return for doing the right thing, today sees the launch of a world-first – a lottery that can do just this. The Carbon Lottery is the world’s first initiative aimed at tackling climate change by encouraging people to play for good.

It’s going to take some balls to combat climate change, and we are committed to doing so, one ticket at a time.
Gregor Paterson Jones

A Carbon Lottery ticket costs just £2 and is entered into a draw offering a jackpot prize of up to €4m (£3.6 million). More than half of the ticket price goes to providing the prize pool to pay out the Lottery prizes. The remainder goes into the cost of sourcing, assessing, negotiating and purchasing the best community-based offset credits across the globe, which are helping to tackle climate change. Of course a small allocation is also set aside to run, operate and market the Lottery itself. The projects range from a wind farm in Turkey to renewable energy community projects in Guatemala and Brazil, and a small hydro installation in India. Each ticket offsets 100kg of Carbon Dioxide equivalent as well as entering the player into the draw for both the big jackpot prize and the smaller prizes.

Gregor Paterson Jones, co-founder of The Carbon Lottery and CEO of Sterling Waterford Securities, comments:
"The Carbon Lottery is about incentivising people to do the right thing. It doesn’t cost you much and it could change your life as well as someone else’s.  It’s going take more than a pretty picture of a forest or a glacier or a feel-good message to make people act against climate change. People want more bang for their buck. It’s going to take some balls to combat climate change, and we are committed to doing so, one ticket at a time."

The live draws take place in Malta, with the first draw taking place on July 5th 2011. It can be watched online at www.thecarbonlottery.com or on the Carbon Lottery YouTube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/thecarbonlottery )

About the Carbon Lottery

The Carbon Lottery is a new way of carbon-offsetting with incentives: the chance of a lottery win! It takes away the confusion and the mistrust that many UK consumers associate with offsetting and replaces it with a lottery format, something that UK consumers are familiar with. It is fun, exciting and social, and players get the opportunity to limit the impact of their emissions – by buying a ticket and ‘playing for good’. The Carbon Lottery is licensed in Malta by the License and Gaming Authority of Malta. All live draws take place in our studio in Malta and are broadcast on the Carbon Lottery website and YouTube channel.

Sterling Waterford Fund management services is the manager of the Voluntary Carbon Offset Fund which purchases carbon credits on behalf of the Carbon Lottery and manages the retirement of these credits.

How to play the Carbon Lottery

At its most basic level, you buy a ticket and enter the draw, just like any other online lottery.

It’s simple. The first step is to visit the website www.thecarbonlottery.com. As well as easy tips for reducing your avoidable carbon emissions, you will also find our fun, easy-to-use calculator to give you an estimate of your unavoidable carbon emissions. You can also pool your tickets in a syndicate and share and challenge your friends to offset.

This estimate will give you an idea of how many £2 tickets you need to buy to achieve your desired offset. Each ticket offsets 100kg of carbon, roughly the equivalent a 200 mile road trip in a Ford Fiesta.

Draws take place from our studio in Malta, online at www.thecarbonlottery.com

About carbon offsetting

Almost everything we do results in carbon emissions, some avoidable and some unavoidable. Reducing our avoidable emissions is essential to reducing the threat of climate change. This could mean flying less, eating less meat and dairy, or insulating your home.

Carbon offsetting is a way of compensating for your unavoidable carbon emissions. By supporting projects that are helping to reduce the emissions of entire communities, you can go some way to balancing out actions such as taking a shower, heating your home or taking public transport.

Playing for good – a brief history of lotteries

The concept of playing for good is well-established – below is a brief snapshot of some of the top facts and stats on the early history of lotteries:
•           It is believed that the Great Wall of China was built with funding from lotteries
•           The first known European lottery occurred during the Roman Empire, and was mainly used as a form of amusement at dinner parties
•           During the 1400s, the Belgians used lotteries to finance the building of public assets such as chapels, alms-houses, canals and port facilities
•           In 1498, the Portuguese instituted a lottery to raise funds to help the underprivileged and meet the country's monetary needs
•           In the UK, the first recorded official lottery was chartered by Queen Elizabeth I, in 1566, and was drawn in 1569. This lottery was designed to raise money for the 'reparation of the havens and strength of the Realme, and towardes such other publique good workes.'
•         The British Museum was established through funding from a lottery in 1753
