July 20, 2012, Cambridge, UK. Press Dispensary. Excelr8 Learning, a Cambridge-based private tutoring service that provides supplementary maths and English tuition to children aged 5-16, has announced the results of its annual ‘Young Writers Competition’, with prizes awarded to two children and their primary schools.

This year’s winners are Clara Morgan, a year 3 pupil from Great Shelford who’s studying at Great and Little Shelford C.E. (A) School, and Charlotte Pearce, a Year 5 pupil who lives in St Ives and attends Swavesey Primary School. Each winner received a mountain bike, awarded last weekend by Excelr8’s owner and manager, Ms Anna Crown, in a short ceremony at Excelr8 Learning’s centre in Milton, one of three centres across the city. The prize winners and their families attended.
Anna Crown then joined the winners’ school assemblies last week to award the schools £200 each in front of the children and parents. The winners’ stories were also read out, giving the winners huge school acclaim for their efforts.

The annual pair of £200 school prizes (as well as the mountain bike prizes to the winners themselves) form part of Excelr8 Learning’s support for local schools, enabling them to purchase more written expression resources and to assist their pupils to become better writers and to enjoy writing.

Open to primary school children in Cambridge and the surrounding areas, the writing competition – which is now in its fourth year – has two age categories: years 3-4 and 5-6. In 2012, the year 3-4 students were asked to write an original short story including the phrase “I felt so proud of what I had done”, while the year 5-6 students’ short stories included the phrase “I knew at that moment it was something I would never forget”. The competition received a high volume of entries from a wide range of schools.

Anna Crown commented: “We offer our congratulations to Clara and Charlotte and wish them every success in their future writing. Helping children to write well is a cornerstone of our approach at Excelr8 Learning. Back in 2009, we started an annual writing competition in the hope of encouraging more children to enjoy their writing. We had such a positive response that it has become a regular and very popular annual event.”
