Naked bike riders salute Brighton & Hove as a cycle city
The cavalcade of bodies and banners on bikes set off from Preston Park, where participants had prepared placards and painted their bodies with slogans declaring the benefits of cycling: 'clean and green', 'cheap and cheerful', 'burn fat not oil!'. A light hearted twist on 'one less car' cycle activism motto, one read 'one less bra!' as a fleet of sound systems pumped out upbeat tunes such as 'Shaking That Ass' , 'The Push-Bike Song' and 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?'.
The route took in the sights of the city, passing the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier and the seafront, then back past Churchill Square, the Lanes and North Laine, before heading for a big splash at the naturist beach via St James Street and Kemptown.
Ride supporter, Alice Pickering, responded to police concerns about public nudity saying, "we had cheers and friendly waves the whole way. It caused much more laughter than alarm, and had an effect of de-stress rather than distress!"
Co-organiser Duncan Blinkhorn said, "the ride has been a fantastic demonstration of the pedal-powered, free and easy fun that can be had on a bike."
He added: "Many people feel nervous about getting on a bike because they feel vulnerable in traffic. The World Naked Bike Ride shows that when we have safety in numbers we are emboldened enough to strip away our protective layers and laugh in the face of our vulnerabilities. The more people who cycle, the more confident we feel and, evidence shows, the safer it becomes for everyone. With the terrifying prospect of climate change, this is one way to cut carbon emissions while keeping fit and saving money."
Organisers were upbeat about the progress being made in Brighton & Hove to improve conditions for cycling, saying: "we applaud Brighton & Hove City Council's efforts to improve conditions for cycling with better bike lanes and a 20 mph speed limit, enabling more people to feel safer on their bikes."
A post-ride, clothes-optional pool party - the Midsummer Skinny Dip - will be held at Pells pool in Lewes on Saturday 22 June, 7.30-10.30pm.
