As motor insurance fraud rises, private investigators step in

2014-12-03

December 03, 2014, London, England. Press Dispensary. A huge surge in car insurance fraud is pushing premiums up after two settled years and making life a misery for car owners affected by fraud, says one of the leading detective agencies responsible for investigating fraud, London Private Detectives.

In April this year, insurance giant Aviva reported a giant 19% increase in fraudulent insurance claims in just one year, leading to a loss of more than £110 million in bogus claims. Then last month, the latest AA car insurance index revealed that the average premium is once more on the rise, with £90 added to every policy by 'crash for cash' fraudsters, not least through the practice of deliberately staging rear-end shunts (slamming on the brakes so the driver behind has no option but to crash into the fraudster) purely to make a claim, generally not just for the vehicle damage but for whiplash or other injuries where claims can be very high.

As more and more frauds take place, more blameless drivers become fraud victims; they sometimes need to establish their own innocence and the fraudsters' dishonesty. This can be a nightmare and it's where a private detective service can be essential

"It isn't just insurance companies and premium payers that lose out," reports Christine Alexander, chief investigator at London Private Detectives. "As more and more frauds take place, more blameless drivers become fraud victims; they sometimes need to establish their own innocence and the fraudsters' dishonesty. This can be a nightmare and it's where a private detective service can be essential.

"The AA says that efforts to clamp down on fraudulent claims are not having the effect that insurers had hoped. If any motorist thinks they may be a victim of fraud, it's in their interest to bring their suspicions to us as soon as possible so that we can get on the case straight away."

London Private Detectives are finding that the rise in fraud is not just restricted to the roads. Christine Alexander continues: "Intellectual Property Theft and Fraud in the workplace is far more common than people believe. We all think it's something that happens to someone else – until it happens to us. And because it's in the workplace people are often unsure what to do but the answer is the same as for everyone who believes they may be a victim of fraud. It's in people's interests to bring their suspicions a private detective service such as London Private Detectives. We can listen to their concerns and any evidence they can offer, and help with the next step.

"Over time, we have assisted hundreds of fraud victims: we have helped put fraudsters behind bars and we have helped in the return of fraudulently acquired funds."
