Christmas shortage of Google-approved affordable Android tablets? Resolved.
• Google insists Android devices must be certified before including standard Google apps, resulting in shortage of certified lower-priced tablets for bargain hunters.
• In response, UK-based time2 launches first Google certified, Android 7.0, 10" tablet with 3G for under £120.
December 19, 2017, BLACKBURN, LANCASHIRE, UK. Press Dispensary. A shortage of quality "budget" Android 7.0 tablets approved by Google is pushing frustrated UK bargain hunters to settle for more expensive big brand devices or take the risk of being left with a Christmas turkey. And it's likely to carry on into the January sales and beyond.
The shortage is caused by Google's growing insistence that all Android devices, such as tablets and phones, must be Google certified if they want to include any Google apps, such as the all-important Google Play Store, as well as Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and much more. So-called "tier one" big brands, such as Samsung Galaxy, have long been certified but, until now, few "tier two" products have made the grade.
Google has some stark warnings for shoppers who buy uncertified devices. Not only are they ineligible to include Google apps but they carry other potential risks, ranging from poor password and backup security to fake Google apps, and the prospect that Android features and apps may not work correctly and may not be updated when bugs appear.(1)
Shoppers looking for budget 10 inch Android tablets, where until now there appears to have been nothing certified below £150, will be cheered by the news that Blackburn-based technology brand time2 is launching its 10 inch Android 7.0 tablet. It has a superfast quad core A7 processor, IPS screen, 3G and, yes, Google certification and a suite of Google apps - at a breakthrough price of just £119.99. It will soon be joined by an 8 inch sibling priced below £90 and ready for the New Year.
time2 CEO, Kam Kothia, said: "Google certification has crept up on everyone almost unnoticed but from now on it is going to be essential on new Android handhelds. It would be madness to buy a new Android tablet or phone without it, which is why we’re so pleased to offer what we believe is the first certified 10 inch Android 7.0 3G tablet for less than £120, and to do it just in time for Christmas.
"It has a very keen price but the time2 tablet is a high spec, high quality device. And it’s not just us saying so: we have a certificate from Google to prove it."
The time2 10 inch Google certified tablet is on sale from today at http://bit.ly/time2-tablet10 and is also on Amazon. The time2 8 inch will be announced in the coming days.
