#PeoplesVote Campaign for Brexit Deal Launches

2018-04-16

April 16, 2018, Valencia, Spain. Press Dispensary. Bremain in Spain ( http://www.bremaininspain.com ), a group campaigning for the rights of British citizens in Spain and the EU, supports the PeoplesVote campaign to secure a vote for the British public on the Brexit deal. Last weekend saw the launch of this huge campaign, which represents months of work by numerous pro-European groups that are co-ordinating their activities from shared offices in Westminster. The groups include Open Britain, Britain for Europe, European Movement, OFOC! and Scientists for EU.

Saturday 14 April saw thousands of campaigners take to the UK’s streets, talking to the public and collecting signatures. The results of their activities support recent opinion polls that suggest there’s an increasing demand from Remainers and Leavers alike to have a final say on any deal Theresa May secures.

Sue Wilson, Chair of Bremain in Spain, comments: "With each new revelation about the damage Brexit would cause, people are increasingly nervous about the UK's future. Predictions by Remain that were previously regarded as ‘project fear’ are now being taken seriously and are supported by the government's own analyses. Many Leave voters can see that they were seriously misled about the Leave vision of the future. The Brexit that was sold to the public bears no relation to its reality. Everyone deserves a chance to change their minds now that the facts have become clear."

On Sunday 15 April, the PeoplesVote campaign was officially launched in London to a packed audience. Speakers included Layla Moran (Liberal Democrats), Caroline Lucas (Green Party), Chuka Umunna (Labour) and Anna Soubrey (Conservative). They were joined by actor, Sir Patrick Stewart, of 'Star Trek' and 'X-Men' fame and the host, comedian Andy Parsons. The campaign will expand over coming months. Planned activities include a huge march and rally in Westminster on 23 June, the second anniversary of the referendum.

Wilson adds: "Bremain in Spain is a member of Britain for Europe and partnered with European Movement, so we have a real stake in this campaign. We’ll be taking the message to Brits in Spain and will continue lobbying MPs to make the PeoplesVote a reality. It’s essential that all options are on the table. We don’t want a Hobson's choice of accepting the inevitably worse deal, or accepting no deal. It must be a meaningful vote, which includes the option to remain in the European Union. If the deal on offer is inferior to what we have now, which is practically a given, then we must have sensible alternatives."

Wilson concludes: "Even when we secure a final say on Brexit for the British public, millions of British citizens living in the EU will continue to be denied the right to vote because of the 15 year rule. The Overseas Electors Bill recently passed through the House of Commons on second reading but it’s possibly years away from becoming law. For Brits in the EU to be denied a vote in the Brexit referendum was heart-breaking. They were then denied a vote in May's snap election. Now, it will be third time unlucky but we will still rejoice when parliament agrees to the PeoplesVote. We wait to see which party, Labour or Conservative, will jump on the PeoplesVote bandwagon first. Giving the British public an opportunity to change its mind is democracy in action, although the Brexiters will say otherwise. The next task is to ensure that we win the vote, with the option to remain in the EU."

Notes for editors
Bremain in Spain is a group campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Union and to protect the rights of British migrants living and working in Spain. Run by a team of volunteers and chaired by Sue Wilson - a resident of the Valencian Community - the group advocates a tolerant and outward-looking society. It believes this is best achieved by the UK remaining a member of the EU. Bremain in Spain is part of the British in Europe coalition of 10 UK citizens’ groups across the EU. It is also affiliated to Britain for Europe and European Movement.
