Brighton Naked Bike Ride to celebrate anniversary of women’s liberation

May 14, 2018, BRIGHTON, UK. Press Dispensary. Brighton Naked Bike Ride will return to the city’s streets on Sunday 10 June 2018. The event is an annual cycle “protestival” against oil dependency and a call for more bike-friendly streets. A special emphasis will be made this year to celebrate the role of cycling in women’s liberation, marking the 100th anniversary of votes for some women in 1918.

The free to participate, grassroots demonstration expects to see up to 1,000 women and men gather from 12 noon at The Level park, Union Road. Setting off from 1:30pm, participants will cycle through the city centre and along the seafront, as bare as they dare, concluding at the naturist beach on Madeira Drive.

Sara Nixon, who is part of the organising team, said: “There’s a strong link between cycling and women’s empowerment throughout history, and we’re excited to dedicate the ride to this theme this year.

From my first terrifying commute by bike through London traffic, to completing two long-distance triathlons which included cycling 112 miles, the freedom and sense of achievement I have gained from riding has been utterly mind-blowing.

Women’s protest has clearly come a long way in since 1918 – via the Feminist movement of the 1960s onwards, Pussy Riot, FEMEN, and the recent #metoo revelations on social media. At the Brighton Naked Bike Ride, we've worked to make the event more inclusive by confronting nuisance photographers and building a sense of togetherness. Last year we also introduced clowns to “police” onlookers – tackling potential problem situations with a sense of humour!

The ride passes through the city centre, along the seafront, and ends at the naturist beach on Madeira Drive. Full nudity is encouraged, although the dress code is “as bare as you dare”.

A post-ride party is being planned at the Volks Club, near the ride’s end on Madeira Drive.

Women and cycling in history

Louise Jeye, writer, 1895:

There is a new dawn … of emancipation, and it is brought about by the cycle. Free to wheel, free to spin out in the glorious country, unhampered by chaperones … the young girl of today can feel the real independence of herself and, while she is building up her better constitution, she is developing her better mind.

Susan B Anthony, US civil rights leader, 1896:

"[The bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood."

Bike Week 2018, 9-17 June

Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging 'everyday cycling for everyone'. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to work or school, the local shops or just to visit friends.

Brighton joined the World Naked Bike Rides around the world - celebrating cycling and the human body - in 2006 and has been a staple event in Brighton’s summer calendar ever since.

The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture. Brighton’s 2018 World Naked Bike Ride, taking place on Sunday 10 June, will also celebrate the role of cycling in women’s liberation to mark the 100th anniversary of the female vote.

The event is part of national Bike Week and full nudity is permitted, but participants are encouraged to take part wearing whatever makes them feel comfortable.
