Bremain in Spain celebrates the huge turnout at People’s Vote march
The rally, organised by the People's Vote campaign, is calling for a vote on any final Brexit deal between the UK and the EU. Wide-ranging groups, including Bremain in Spain and Españoles de Reino Unido, attended from across the UK and Europe. The march represented the single largest protest the UK has witnessed since the anti-Iraq War protests in 2003.
Bremain in Spain chair, Sue Wilson, who was marching with her group, said: "Not only was this the biggest anti-Brexit rally, but more of our members than ever before flew in from across Spain and the EU. The politicians in Westminster can no longer pretend we don't exist or that we’re giving up, going away or coming to terms with the referendum result.”
"Even if the UK parliament chooses to turn a blind eye, we know that Brussels has its eyes wide open. We hope it will continue to keep the door open too.”
She continues: “There has been considerable focus on involving young people in the #PeoplesVote campaign. However, Brexit doesn't affect just one demographic. Rather, it affects all Brits in the UK and the EU who have benefitted from the advantages of EU membership, or want to do so in the future - young and old alike. Older people may not expect to enjoy the same quantity of life as the younger generation, but we certainly deserve the same quality of life."
Alastair Stewart, Bremain in Spain advisor, said: "It's madness and slander to think of British migrants in Europe as exclusively retirees or backpackers. Our backgrounds and circumstances are vastly diverse, rising far above the cliché of ‘expats in the sun'. We find that cliché quite offensive.”
He concludes: "On Saturday, Westminster had a great chance to see the vast variety of people affected by Brexit. The government's obsession with delivering Brexit is blinding it to the real people who are suffering from its parochial ignorance about its own policies.”
