Bremain in Spain Members Meet Vince Cable in Madrid

2018-11-12
Sharing their support for a People’s Vote

Noviembre 12, 2018, Valencia, Spain. Press Dispensary. Representatives of Bremain in Spain ( http://www.bremaininspain.com ), a citizens’ rights group that is campaigning to stop Brexit, met Liberal Democrat leader, Vince Cable, in Madrid on Friday 9 November. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ongoing concerns about the UK government’s chaotic Brexit approach and to call for a People's Vote.

Vince Cable was met by Matt Davies, Lexi Welp, and Lawrence Baron of Bremain in Spain. Also present were Lib Dem MEP, Catherine Bearder, and Sal Brinton, president of UK Liberal Democrats. The group convened at the Marriott Auditorium Hotel and Conference Centre in Madrid. Mr Cable mentioned the meeting during his speech at plenary later that day.

Bremain in Spain chair, Sue Wilson, says: “This was a great opportunity to discuss our Brexit-related concerns with Vince Cable. Bremain was represented by local members from the Madrid area who found the event interesting and informative. My personal participation involved co-editing a press article with Vince Cable ( https://bit.ly/2POvP0M ) that reiterates the issues facing British citizens face here in Spain and dispels harmful and misleading stereotypes.”

She adds: "Since the start of our campaign, we’ve had considerable support from the LibDems. This support was reiterated in Madrid with a strong message from Vince Cable that his party is 100% behind us.”

The discussion covered the Brexit concerns of British citizens living in EU 27 countries and, in particular, the themes not covered by the EU withdrawal bill. These include: continuing freedom of movement, recognition of professional qualifications, student fees and the status of non-EU spouses. Bremain members also voiced their concerns about “no-deal”, and the ongoing lack of certainty.

Matt Davies of Bremain in Spain comments: “From our perspective, it was a chance to voice our concerns to people who can feed them back directly to those in power, and to be given an audience by people who hold some influence, especially as the government doesn't seem too interested.”

He adds: “We were happy to convey that Spanish citizens had been supportive of our efforts, and we have not experienced the same hostility that some EU citizens are suffering in the UK.”
