UbiquiSys Solves In-building Cellular Coverage Using Today?s Standard Handsets
February 14, 2006, Press Dispensary. Convergence specialist UbiquiSys Ltd (http://www.ubiquisys.com) today launched the ZoneGat(TM) UMTS/GSM in-building coverage system at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona. With indoor 3G cellular coverage frequently poor or non-existent, ZoneGate technology gives designated users in homes and small businesses access to a full range of mobile services using conventional GSM/UMTS handsets.
UbiquiSys CEO, Len Schuch, said: 'The ZoneGate system is a low-cost access point for mobile operators that want to provide 3G services to homes and small businesses. We feel it is essential to follow a standards-based approach to convergence that keeps customer ownership firmly in the hands of mobile service providers. This is why ZoneGate supports today?s handsets and employs open standards to connect with the mobile operator?s network.'
Few mobile operators in Western Europe can justify conventional 3G deployments that extend much beyond the regulatory minimum. This, coupled with the challenges implicit in the physical characteristics of spread spectrum technology, means in-building UMTS coverage is unlikely to be tackled through any expansion of outdoor networks.
Additionally, WiFi technology poses as much a threat as an opportunity to mobile operators. Quality of service issues and limited device availability - along with the Trojan horse implications of allowing unpredictable service access via WiFi enabled devices - make WiFi too much risk for the mobile sector for too little return.
UbiquiSys CTO, Will Franks, said: 'We?ve avoided any kind of repeater approach to this problem and instead developed a small plug-and-play device that relies on a user?s broadband connection to pass both signalling and call traffic between the locally connected mobile phone and the operator?s network. Mobile phone users making or receiving calls on their existing GSM/UMTS devices within the range of ZoneGate will have their calls received and managed by the unit.'
Phil Kendall, director of global wireless practice at Strategy Analytics, commented: 'Everyone wants a single mobile terminal to consolidate their telephony usage. They want to be reached at one number, anytime and anywhere. UbiquiSys has come up with a simple system using existing handsets that could soon turn this search into a reality.'
UbiquiSys recently announced it had secured major investment to further develop and commercialise its ZoneGate system. The funding package is supported by technology investors, Advent Venture Partners and Atlas Venture. UbiquiSys expects to raise further rounds of venture capital later in 2006 and is already receiving high levels of interest from investors and major mobile service providers.
