Nexor Commits to Capability Maturity
With the adoption of the internationally recognised Capability Maturity Model Integration framework
August 09, 2006, Press Dispensary. Nexor ( http://www.nexor.com ), a provider of high-grade security products and services to the military and government, is embarking on a corporate programme to adopt capability maturity model integration (CMMI) as endorsed by the US Department of Defense.
CMMI is internationally recognised as a framework for the development and improvement of processes within a software engineering organisation. Outside the US, 50 companies trading in Nexor’s core markets of defence and government have adopted CMMI, and only five companies in Europe have achieved the highest level of compliance (level 5); Nexor believes the initiative will bring significant differentiation to the company and value to its customers.
Steve Kingan, chief executive officer, comments: “CMMI represents the height of best practice in our market; Nexor has a policy of adopting appropriate best practice, so this is an ambitious but natural extension to our various existing accreditations. The level of rigour that CMMI will bring to our processes will increase our competitiveness as a supplier of services in the high assurance sector by lowering project costs and risk. It will also complement our evaluated guard and gateway technology and consolidate our position as a market leader in our field.”
Nexor will be implementing CMMI across the whole organisation. This creates a major advantage for a small to medium enterprise (SME) whose bigger competitors frequently trade on a reputation of CMMI when only a small pocket of compliance exists.
The CMMI framework consists of five levels of increasing maturity, against which an organisation's capability is assessed. Most organisations with ISO 9001 certification aim at being assessed to CMMI level 2, whereby they can demonstrate a basic set of effective processes. To achieve CMMI level 5, 25 processes need to be refined to include - ultimately - the ability to measure process failures and inherently find resolutions to those failures, the goal being to have a ‘self-healing’ organisation.
